10 Things Every Contractor Website Needs to Win More Enquiries

A practical checklist for builders and tradespeople: the features that help a website turn visitors into calls, messages and quote requests.

Your website has one main job: to turn people who are interested in your work into enquiries. A good-looking site helps, but what really matters is whether a homeowner can quickly see that you do the job they need, in their area, to a standard they trust — and then get in touch easily.

Here are ten things we look for on every contractor website. If yours is missing several of them, it is probably costing you work.

1. A clear headline that says what you do and where

Within a few seconds, visitors should know what you do and where you work. “Roofing contractors in Leeds and West Yorkshire” tells people far more than “Welcome to our website”.

2. Your phone number, visible on every page

Put your number at the top of every page and make it tappable on mobile, so customers can call with one tap. Many trade enquiries still start with a phone call.

3. A separate page for each main service

One page listing everything rarely ranks well or persuades anyone. Give each important service its own page that explains what is involved, the kinds of jobs you take on and why customers choose you.

4. Real photos of your work

Project photos are often the deciding factor. Show finished jobs, before-and-afters and work in progress. Write a sentence or two about each project: what the customer needed and what you did.

5. The areas you cover

Make it obvious which towns and areas you work in. This reassures customers and helps you appear in local searches. Avoid creating dozens of near-identical town pages — useful, genuine content works better.

6. Genuine reviews and trust signals

Show reviews from real customers, along with any trade association memberships, accreditations, insurance and guarantees you genuinely hold. These matter even more in trades where customers worry about cowboys.

7. A short, simple enquiry form

Ask only for what you need: name, contact details, the type of job and a short description. Long forms put people off. If it helps you quote, let customers upload a photo of the job.

8. Fast loading on mobile

Most visitors will be on a phone, often on a patchy connection. Large images, heavy plugins and slow hosting all cost you enquiries. Test your site on your own phone, away from Wi-Fi.

9. Clear calls to action

Every page should make the next step obvious: “Request a free quote”, “Call us today”, “Send us photos of your job”. Don’t make visitors hunt for how to contact you.

10. Easy to update

A website you can’t update quickly goes stale. Adding new projects and reviews regularly keeps it fresh for customers and for Google. A WordPress site built with a page builder lets you make simple changes yourself.

Where to start

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Start with the basics that affect enquiries most — your phone number, service pages and project photos — then work through the rest.
